Chisinau’s Public Transport: A Tourist’s Guide

Welcome to Chisinau, Moldova’s vibrant capital! Exploring this charming city can be an exhilarating experience, but navigating unfamiliar public transport systems can add a layer of stress. Fear not, fellow traveler! This guide will equip you with the knowledge to confidently conquer Chisinau’s public transport network, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Chisinau’s Public Transport Options:

  • Trolleybuses: The most common and extensive network.
  • Buses: Offering similar coverage to trolleybuses, albeit with slightly fewer routes.
  • Minibuses: Cover shorter distances and operate on fixed routes.

Fare: A flat rate of 6 Moldovan Leu (MDL) applies to all rides.

Payment Methods:

  • Cash: The most widely accepted method, particularly with minibus drivers and in older vehicles.
  • Conductors: These onboard personnel will collect fares as you travel.
  • Stationary Validators: Located on designated routes (2, 5, 22, 23, 24, and 30), these allow cashless payments using your bank card, phone, or smartwatch. Simply tap your chosen payment method, receive confirmation, and show it to inspectors if needed.
  • Local Number Payment (Moldcell & Orange only): A limited option where you scan a QR code or send an SMS with the transport unit code (availability varies).

Latest update: Now you can pay with Moldcell number in all units of transportation.

Important Note: Not all vehicles offer every payment method. Having some cash readily available is always recommended as a backup.

Tech-Savvy Navigation:

Embrace the digital age by downloading the Tranzy or EasyWay app. These platforms offer real-time bus locations, allowing you to track your desired bus and plan your journeys efficiently.

  • Learn a few basic Romanian phrases: A simple “Bună ziua” (Good morning/afternoon) or “Mulțumesc” (Thank you) goes a long way!
  • Keep an eye on your belongings: As with any public transport system, be vigilant and keep your valuables secure.
  • Don’t be shy to ask for help: Politely ask locals or fellow passengers for directions or assistance. They’ll be happy to help!
  • Listen, but double-check: While locals might rely on audio announcements for upcoming stations, these announcements may not be entirely reliable for tourists. To avoid missing your stop, double-check your location using your online navigation map alongside the announcements.

The city’s public transport is managed by RTEC (Regia Transport Electric Chisinau). Curious about the history of public transport in Chisinau? Get a glimpse of the past at the RTEC Museum!
